Iran nuclear deal joint commission held at UN

The meeting of the foreign ministers of the countries involved in the Iran nuclear deal took place on Wednesday evening at the request of Federica Mogherini European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, accompanied by Abbas Araghchi his Deputy for Legal and International Affairs as well as Majid Takht-Ravanchi Zarif's Deputy for European and American Affairs, attended the meeting.

All the foreign ministers of the signatories to the international nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also took part, while the UK foreign minister Boris Johnson was absent.

The nuclear agreement, signed by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, and upheld by all other member countries of the world community through UN Resolution 2231, went into effect on January 16, 2016.

This is while, the US new administration led by Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to kill the landmark deal, describing it as 'one of the worst deals' ever signed by Washington.

In his UN General Assembly speech, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said that the JCPOA is not renegotiable.

He said that President Trump's speech in the UNGA was totally in disagreement with the JCPOA, and if the US quits the deal, Iran 'will respond decisively and resolutely to its violation.'
